I’d like to tell you I played it cool – that I went on to power through my workout with a joy and peace about what was to come before collecting my kids and heading home to continue our day.
But, that would be another lie! As I climbed onto a treadmill and turned it on high enough to keep me moving, I frantically texted my best friend, “Oh crap! I’m pregnant!”
And with that, it was out in the universe. This was really happening. I was going to have a baby!
Now, I am not one of those women who finds out she’s expecting and waits until the first trimester is over before sharing the happy news with family and friends. No, I’m the girl that pees on the stick and then blabs it all over Facebook right afterward because I just can’t contain myself. I get SO excited…..and I just can’t hide it 😉
But first things first – I had to let this baby’s daddy in on the secret! Part of me wanted to keep it a secret for awhile; to keep him unburdened with the weight of anticipating the arrival of a new family member to love, clothe, feed and care for.
But, that lasted all of about 5 seconds! The moment he walked in the door and laid eyes on me, he knew something was up. That man knows me, I tell you!
So, I told him to close his eyes and led him into our bedroom, where a gift bag lay, waiting for him to open it. He glanced at me with a funny look on his face, before picking it up and retrieving the contents.
As he assessed what he’d just been given, he closed his eyes and a look of amusement mixed with disbelief and panic spread across his face. After taking a deep breath, he opened and locked his eyes with mine.
All I could do was giggle. And blush, a lot! Now, mind you, our little girls had no idea what was going on between mommy and daddy, so we had some explaining to do.
My husband pulled them up into our bed and shared that I was growing a new little baby in my belly, and of course they were completely over the moon!
In the past we had always announced a pregnancy with a picture of our positive pregnancy test to accompany the news, so this time I wanted to do something different. The day after I shared the news with my husband I called a sweet photographer friend of mine and asked if she could squeeze us in for a quick family session.
I knew I wouldn’t be able to keep my secret for long and wanted to do it in a memorable way! So we had some fun pictures made and sent a short slideshow announcement to our families before sharing it on social media.
I was five weeks along.
