The following post was written by Lilah Higgins, a graphic designer based in Cody, Wyoming right at the foot of Yellowstone. When she’s not chasing around her toddlers like a crazy woman or spending time with her techie husband, she is working alongside talented Makers by providing them with logos, branding, and design consultation. She drinks her coffee iced and enjoys opening her home to people and telling the stories of Makers & Creatives. She’s also the founder of the #waketomake hashtag on Instagram. My journey into small business was a weird one. I opened an Etsy shop with horrible digital prints that didn’t sell.
It wasn’t long after my husband and I got married that we decided I was going to try to sell my art. But, at the time, “selling my art” was the only goal. How vague it was!
If there’s anything I’ve learned about being successful in business it’s that the plan is pretty much the most important part.
The funny thing is, I’m not a planner at all and I function terribly under pressure and deadlines. But there is something magical that happens when you mix your talents and dreams together with a purpose and a plan.
All those years ago when I started “selling my art” I never dreamed that one day I would be a work-at-home mom of 2 toddlers and partnering with women all over the world, giving their voices the visuals and branding their work deserves.
I never thought that one day I’d get to call myself a “Branding Designer for Makers and Creatives who #waketomake.” It still feels too unreal!
But that’s exactly what I get to do, and it’s awesome and crazy and sometimes I feel like my brain is going to explode.
One of the best pieces of advice I’ve ever received for the early years of motherhood is the idea of embracing “new normals,” and now it’s something that I’ve actually learned to apply to all areas of my life.
I first learned about this concept in Rachel Jankovic’s Loving The Little Years, which I would recommend to any new mom a million times over.
She talks about how we are used to being at level one, but when a newborn arrives it’s like we suddenly find ourselves at level 10. We have a season of adjustment until we can adapt to our “new normal” and that level 10 becomes our new level 1. And so on, the cycles continues.
I think they call it learning, and boy can it cause some major brain pain!
As moms, we are in an ever-changing environment with new levels to keep adjusting to and it can become overwhelming to be constantly growing. But it can also be consistently fulfilling.
So many different things go into running a household that it can often feel like we’re always at level 10. And I’m learning that this growth cycle also happens in business as well.
I’m currently going through Dana Malstaff’s Boss Mom Academy along with Kelsey, and WOAH – talk about growth and adjusting to new levels!
I mean, it’s like a moment-by-moment stretch and apply and learn and stretch some more and apply and observe and learn and stretch again. I can literally feel my brain growing in size some days!
But I want to encourage you today to remember that inside of your current level 10 are some hidden gems that will only manifest in you under the pressure.
You were meant to go through this refining in order to become more, through this consistent, amazing cycle. I encourage you to not become bitter or frustrated by your level 10 moments, but instead to take a step back and remember that soon it’s going to be your new level 1 and you WILL make it through.
Because I love and believe in this process and in incredible, talented women like YOU, I wanted to share with you about the new Starter Kit I’ve created for wives and moms looking to step out in faith and start their own businesses as mompreneurs.
Taking this step might be a level 10 for you, but I promise this kit will make the process of getting to your new level 1 faster and easier.
Running a home-based business as a wife and mom doesn’t have to be complicated and you don’t have to be stuck at a level 10 forever! I’d love to help you pursue your dreams and passions and make things a bit easier on you as you juggle running your business and your household at the same time.
I believe you were made to #waketomake. You can find out more about getting supported throughout your journey as a creative mompreneur HERE.
