As a busy stay-at-home mama of four little children it can be extremely difficult to prioritize my own health and self-care. But, I know that the better I take care of myself the better I will be able to take care of my family well. Here are 8 simple things I try to do every day to invest in my personal health.
Warm Water + Lemon
Every morning the first thing I do is make myself a warm cup of lemon water, sometimes adding in a teaspoon or two of raw honey for an extra energy boost. Lemon water helps stimulate the digestive system, kickstart the metabolism, flush the body of toxins, purify the bloodstream, boost the immune system and is a great source of citric acid, magnesium, potassium, phosphorus and calcium. It also combats inflammation in the body and helps maintain beautiful skin, hair, nails and eyes.
A few years ago my sister-in-law introduced me to the ancient ayurvedic practice of oil pulling. I’ll be the first to admit I was pretty weirded and grossed out by the idea at first….but once I bucked up the courage to give it a shot, I was hooked! It wasn’t actually gross like I’d thought it would be, and for all the purported health benefits (healthier and whiter teeth, clearer skin, extra energy, detoxification, optimized hormone function) I was game to try it out long-term. Now it’s a regular facet to my daily health regimen. I keep a small glass jar of coconut oil on my nightstand and pop a spoonful in my mouth immediately after waking. I swish for 15-20 minutes while making my cup of warm lemon water, throwing in a load of laundry and getting breakfast started. Once I’ve finished swishing I spit the oil (which should have a cloudy appearance from absorbing all the toxins) into the trash can so it doesn’t clog my drains. After a quick brush with some natural toothpaste, my mouth feels healthy, fresh and clean all day!
Probiotics have risen tremendously in notoriety over the years – and for good reason! Our bodies are full of bacteria – both good and bad. Probiotic bacteria are the good guys, helping maintain a healthy gut, which is essential to gastrointestinal health, urinary health, women’s health, immune system health and oral health. Eating probiotic-rich foods and/or taking a quality whole-foods derived probiotic supplement can help correct many health issues such as allergies, irritable bowel conditions, constipation, yeast infections and even possibly the common cold! Our family personally uses Bio-Kult probiotics – you can find them here!
Every day I supplement with around 500mg of a high quality foods-based vitamin C powder to boost my immune health. Vitamin C acts as an antioxidant that protects cells from damage caused by free radicals. This translates to boosted immunity, cardiovascular health, healing, protection from the negative effects of stress on the body, lowered cholesterol, improved circulation and blood sugar regulation and reduced inflammation. Our family uses Pure Radiance Vitamin C Powder – we just mix some up into a glass of water or our smoothies, and voila! Instant immune system boost!
Water is essential to most bodily functions. Adequate water supplies are needed for cellular health, circulation, waste removal, body temperature regulation, lubrication of joints, digestion and healthy skin, among other things. The body has no way to store water and needs fresh supplies every day. So, I follow the rule of thumb to drink at least half your body weight in ounces of water (i.e.: a 130 pound woman should drink 65oz of water per day).
Eat Whole Foods
This is kind of a no brainer. Our bodies are fueled by the foods we put in them. Just like with vehicles, they can operate with low-end gasoline, but operate at a much more optimum level with high-performance gasoline. Our fuel needs to be real. Getting rid of processed, artificial, chemical-laden “foods” is crucial to investing in your long-term, overall health. We love getting our favorite healthy foods from Thrive Market because we save up to 50% off retail prices (which add up in a hurry when shopping from our local grocery store!)
Move Your Body
Another no brainer. Our bodies will begin to atrophy if we don’t use them. They were designed to be used. PLUS, exercise has so many great benefits such as reducing stress, improving quality of sleep, creating endorphins that boost mood and self-esteem, maintaining a healthy weight and aiding our body’s ability to fight disease. Even if it’s just going for a walk or having a 10-minute dance party in my living room with my little ladies, I try to do something active every day! Side note – incorporating strength training into your routine makes a WORLD of difference. You can read more about the benefits here.
Get Enough Sleep
Ok, admittedly I am NOT so great at this one. I should really get myself to bed much earlier than I’ve disciplined myself to do. Not getting adequate sleep eventually takes a huge toll on all bodily functions, mood, and immune system, making us more susceptible to developing healthy conditions and becoming ill. The average adult should aim to get a good 7-10 hours of sleep per night for optimal health and wellness. Some things that help me? Keeping electronics out of the bedroom, using room darkening curtains, and setting a timer 30 minutes before I want to be asleep so I know it’s time to shut everything down and get ready for bed.
I hope that by providing this little snapshot into my daily health routine you’ll be inspired to make some adjustments in your life and being investing into your health!
