Football season. Two words that will either make you leap for joy with excitement or…..not. For many wives and girlfriends, it’s the exact opposite. Those preseason games kick off in August and it’s sayonara until February ladies!! If we women know one thing for certain, it is that many, many, many men cannot help but LOVE the game of football. It would seem that it is almost ingrained in their DNA. That TV turns on, they catch a bar of Carrie Underwood wailing the NFL theme song and it. is. over. So how’s a girl who is not so keen on football supposed to compete for her man’s attention every Sunday, Monday and Thursday night for over 5 straight months?? Simple: don’t!!! Instead of viewing football season with dread, disgust and boredom, what if you tried something different this year. What if you could actually learn to embrace it? Maybe even (gasp) enjoy it?!
Ladies, it’s possible!! I know from experience!! Honestly, I used to think that the fascination with football was plain silliness. I just could. not. get it. But, I loved how passionate my husband was about it!! His passion could be contagious. So, I started asking questions. I learned how to allow him to enjoy his hobby while getting my own needs and desires met too. And, shockingly – I now LOVE football season. Let me clarify – I am not a sports girl. Never have been, never will be. But I am competitive and I love doing things with my husband!! So, the more things we can do together, the better!! Here are 5 tips to help get you from barely tolerating football season to actually enjoying it with your man.
1. Start a Fantasy Football team
If you are at all competitive, or just like the idea of having a reason (other than pure, sacrificial love) to watch football games with your guy, this is a great way for you to get involved! There are lots of free leagues you can join online and honestly, they are really just based on luck. Create your team, have fun following and playing along and score some brownie points by asking your man questions along the way to help you better understand the game. From personal experience, I enjoy it all so much more now that I have a decent understanding of how the game actually works! If you really want to go all out, throw some money in the pot by joining a money league – you might be able to win a little coin while bonding with your man over one of his passions!
2. Pick your favorite “football” foods
Let’s be real for a minute – food makes EVERYTHING better. Especially foods that we love!! One of my favorite things about football season is the fun foods that we break out around our house. Pots of chili, burgers, apple turnovers, chips and salsa, tacos, hard cider and chocolate chip cookies are some of the things we eat on repeat this time of year. So, figure out what you like and you’ll always have something to look forward to come game time!!
3. Throw a party
This is one of my absolute favorite ways to embrace football season – by making a party out of it!! I know people usually reserve football parties for Super Bowl, but – who says you can’t have a football bash every Sunday?! More often than not, we love to invite a few families or handful of friends over to watch the game, eat some good food and enjoy fun fellowship together. The men get to do what they love, the girls get some girl talk time and everyone is happy!!
4. Get tickets to a game
If you’ve never been to an actual football game – you have. to. go. Even if you have not, do not, and will not ever actually like football, it can be so much fun to take your guy to see a game, live and in action!! The atmosphere is a blast and it will give you a better appreciation and perspective of what’s going on on your TV every week. Better yet? Invite a few friends to tag along to the game with you and make an event of it!
5. Take advantage!
Here’s an idea for you. Stop and think about it: every week you know that there are up to 3 different times your guy can happily occupy himself by watching whatever game is on. Do you know what this means?? You have over 5 months FULL of weekly opportunities for you to plan to take some time for yourself. You can work on that project you’ve been putting off forever, or plan a weekly girl’s outing, or take the time for yourself at home by soaking in a bath, reading a good book and doing your nails. Instead of feeling resentful that your guy is prioritizing the time to do something he enjoys, take advantage of that time do prioritize doing the things YOU want to do!! It’s truly a win/win scenario for you both 🙂
Even if you have always loved football and already enjoy football season with your guy, I hope these ideas have helped get the wheels in your brain turning and given you a fresh perspective. Football is here to stay, so ladies – let’s embrace this aspect of our guys’ lives and learn to not just put up with it, but enjoy it!!!
